How can I check a dentist is licensed and their work is real?

Choosing a dentist
The short answer
Ask for the licence number and the authority that issued it, then look it up yourself in that authority's public register where one exists — a framed certificate is not enough. To judge the work, ask for case photos from several angles in natural light, plus a mock-up on your teeth and a written plan. Example: Dr. Khalid Saeed holds Dubai Health Authority licence 06772519, searchable on the DHA Sheryan register.
The detailed answer
Step one is the licence. A confident dentist gives you the number without hesitation. Some authorities run a public register you can search by name or number, such as the Dubai Health Authority's Sheryan register, which shows the practitioner, licence type and facility. In Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, ask the clinic about its licence from the competent health authority and the dentist's syndicate membership, and if in doubt ask that authority directly. Remember: a licence proves eligibility, not the quality of a result.
Step two is checking that the work is real. Genuine before-and-after photos use the same lighting and angle, show the gums and neighbouring teeth, and include side views and a relaxed natural smile, not only retractor shots. Ask for a case similar to yours and whether you can see results some time after fitting. Browse Dr. Khalid's before-and-after gallery with these points in mind.
Step three is the working method, which is the hardest thing to fake. Ask for digital smile design and a mock-up on your teeth before any preparation, a written plan with the teeth, material, preparation level, alternatives and price, and ask where the veneers are made. Dr. Khalid's are made at the Creative Art lab in Dubai; see his profile at Creative Arts Dubai.
Finally, titles and awards are not licences. Ask who gave the award and on what basis. Dr. Khalid was honoured at the Creative Star Award 2024 ceremony in Dubai, organised by Creative Arts itself — we say so for transparency. For a fuller checklist, read how to choose the best dentist in Iraq.
