The short answer
A crown is a full cover fixed over a prepared tooth to protect it and restore its shape; a bridge is a set of joined crowns that replaces a missing tooth using the neighbouring teeth for support. Both suit broken, weak or root-treated teeth. Dr. Khalid Saeed provides them in zirconia or E.max at Celebrity Smile Center in Duhok.
A crown covers the whole tooth on every side, so it needs more preparation than a veneer. It is used when a tooth is too weak for a filling alone: broken, heavily filled or root-treated, especially back teeth that take the force of chewing. A bridge replaces a missing tooth with crowns on the two neighbouring teeth carrying an artificial tooth between them.
Dr. Khalid Saeed chooses the material by the tooth and what it has to do. E.max gives natural translucency and usually suits front teeth. Zirconia is very strong and usually suits molars and bridges, and more translucent grades exist for the front. In smile makeovers, a veneer is preferred over a crown whenever the tooth is healthy enough, because it keeps more of the tooth.
At Celebrity Smile Center in Duhok, the bite and gums are checked before any crown, and the plan explains why a crown was chosen over a filling or veneer, and why a bridge over an implant or the other way round. Dr. Khalid also works at Creative Arts Dental & Aesthetics in Dubai, which he co-founded, while Duhok is his main practice for patients across Iraq.

A crown or bridge can look routine, but how long it lasts depends on precise preparation, a close fit at the margins and the quality of the lab. A poorly made crown can leave a dark line at the gum, decay underneath or a bad smell. So ask about these details, not just the material. Dr. Khalid Saeed is a cosmetic and implant dentist with Dubai Health Authority licence 06772519, and patients from across Iraq come to him to replace old crowns and have new ones made.
At Celebrity Smile Center in Duhok the tooth is X-rayed before crowning, and the plan compares a crown with a veneer or a large filling, and a bridge with an implant where a tooth is missing, setting out pros, cons and price. Zirconia or E.max is chosen according to the tooth's position, the bite and the look you want. Shade is matched to the neighbouring teeth with photos and measurements.
Crowns and bridges are made at Creative Art Dental Lab in Dubai, which also makes Dr. Khalid's veneers. Read the articleA veneer is a thin shell covering only the front of the tooth and usually needs light preparation. A crown covers the whole tooth on every side and needs more preparation. So veneers are used on healthy teeth whose shape or colour we want to change, and crowns on weak, broken or root-treated teeth that need protection.
Neither is better in every case. E.max is more translucent and looks very natural, so it usually suits front teeth. Zirconia is much stronger, so it usually suits molars, bridges and people who clench. Dr. Khalid Saeed chooses the material for each tooth based on its position, the bite and the look required, and states the reason in the plan.
Not always. Root-treated back teeth usually need a crown or a restoration that covers the biting surface, because they become more prone to fracture under chewing force. Root-treated front teeth that have lost little structure may do well with a good filling. The decision depends on how much tooth is left.
A zirconia or E.max crown often lasts 10 years or more with good care. Its life depends on the health of the tooth underneath, clean margins at the gum line, the bite and grinding. Crowns most often fail through decay at the margin or gum disease rather than the material breaking, so flossing and check-ups matter.
If the teeth next to the gap are perfectly healthy, an implant is usually better because they do not need to be prepared. If the neighbouring teeth already need crowns, or an implant is not possible for health or bone reasons, a bridge is a good and quicker option. Your written plan compares both with timing and price.
A crown needs the tooth prepared on all sides, which is irreversible, so there must be a clear reason for it. On weak teeth, a crown protects against fracture. Crowning healthy teeth purely for looks is avoided when veneers, whitening or bonding would be enough. Your written plan states the reason for every crown.
A dark line usually appears with older porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns, or when the gum recedes from a discoloured tooth. Zirconia and E.max crowns are metal-free, which greatly reduces this problem. If the tooth under the crown is very dark, a suitable material is chosen to mask it. Keeping the gums healthy also helps the margins stay hidden.
Usually at least two visits: one for preparation and impressions, and one for fitting once the crown is made. If a root canal is needed first, there will be more. You can send photos and X-rays on WhatsApp beforehand to plan appointments, and the number is stated in your written plan.
The tooth is usually prepared under local anaesthetic, so most people feel only pressure and vibration during the appointment. Afterwards, mild sensitivity to cold or slight gum tenderness for a few days is common and usually settles on its own. Root-treated teeth are usually less sensitive. Tell the clinic if pain persists or the bite feels high, because that needs adjusting.

Modern zirconia is more translucent than older generations and can look natural, especially when layered with porcelain or carefully characterised in the lab. E.max, however, is usually still more translucent and closer to the look of enamel on front teeth. Zirconia is stronger, so it is often preferred for back teeth, people who grind, or covering dark teeth. The choice balances appearance and strength for each tooth.
A porcelain-fused-to-metal crown has a metal framework covered with porcelain. It has been used for decades and is strong, but it can show a dark line at the gum if the gum recedes, and it looks less translucent. Zirconia contains no metal and is light-coloured throughout, so it tends to look more natural at the gum line. Each has its place, and the choice depends on the tooth's position, your bite, the look you want and your budget.
A temporary crown protects the tooth and holds its space until the final crown is fitted, but it is weaker and held with temporary cement. Avoid chewing gum and sticky or hard foods on that side, clean around it gently, and when flossing slide the floss out sideways rather than pulling it up. If it comes off, keep it and contact the clinic to have it refitted soon, as leaving the tooth exposed can cause sensitivity or let neighbouring teeth shift.
The most common cause is food and bacteria collecting under the false tooth of the bridge, where an ordinary toothbrush cannot reach. It can also come from decay under a supporting crown, gum inflammation or a bridge that no longer fits well. Try cleaning with bridge floss or a water flosser, but if the smell persists or you notice bleeding or pain, the bridge should be checked with an X-ray.
Yes. The crown itself cannot decay, but the tooth underneath can, at the margin where crown meets tooth, especially with poor cleaning, gum recession or a crown that does not fit precisely. Daily brushing and flossing therefore stay essential, and regular check-ups with X-rays catch problems early. A crown with accurate margins from a good lab lowers this risk, but does not remove it.
The colour of a ceramic crown is fixed and cannot be whitened or changed in the mouth, so the usual solution is replacing it with a new crown in a matching shade. If you are also thinking of whitening your natural teeth, whiten first and let the colour settle, then have the new crown made to match. Sometimes the old crown is sound and simple whitening of the surrounding teeth is enough to even things out.
Yes, with a conventional bridge, because the missing tooth is replaced by an artificial tooth held by crowns on the two neighbouring teeth, which therefore need preparation. If those teeth are completely healthy, an implant may be the option that preserves them; if they already have large fillings or need crowns anyway, a bridge may suit well. This comparison is explained in the written plan so you can choose with full information.
Common signs include a dark line or gap at the gum margin, an unpleasant smell or taste around the crown, pain on biting, new sensitivity, cracked porcelain or a shade that no longer matches the neighbouring teeth. Some of these are purely cosmetic, while others point to decay or leakage underneath. This is confirmed by examination and X-rays, and a sound crown is not replaced just for the sake of it.
Yes. Dr. Khalid Saeed works with Creative Art Dental Lab in Dubai, in the building of Creative Arts, the clinic he co-founded, for his patients' veneers and crowns. Impressions, photos and shade instructions go to the lab, and the work returns to Duhok for try-in and fitting. Expected timing is stated in the plan so you know how long to stay, and temporary crowns are placed while you wait if needed.
