The short answer
A zirconia crown is a full tooth cover made of zirconium oxide ceramic, metal-free and one of the strongest crown materials. It is used for broken, weak or root-treated teeth, back teeth and implant crowns, and needs more preparation than a veneer because it covers the whole tooth. Dr. Khalid Saeed provides zirconia crowns at Celebrity Smile Center in Duhok after an examination and a written plan.
A crown is different from a veneer: a veneer covers only the front of the tooth, while a crown covers it on all sides. A crown therefore needs more preparation, and is used when a tooth is weak, broken, heavily filled or root-treated, or on top of an implant. Choosing a crown over a veneer should be for a clear reason, not because it is easier.
Zirconia is a very strong ceramic that handles heavy chewing forces, which is why it is a common choice for molars, people who grind, and implant crowns. It comes as monolithic (full-contour) zirconia, which is very strong, or layered with porcelain for appearance. Newer types are more translucent than before, but E.max is still often more lifelike for visible front teeth.
At Celebrity Smile Center in Duhok, Dr. Khalid Saeed chooses the material tooth by tooth: zirconia for molars, implant crowns or heavy bites, and E.max for front teeth when appearance is the priority and the bite allows. Before any crown, gums and decay are treated, and simpler options such as a filling or onlay are considered.
Zirconia crowns also replace old metal-based crowns that leave a dark line at the gum. Dr. Khalid also practises at Creative Arts in Dubai, which he co-founded, but Duhok is his main practice, and patients come from across Iraq.

Zirconia is a strong material, but how natural it looks depends on how it is made, coloured and prepared for. That is why some zirconia crowns look very lifelike and others look flat and opaque white. When you look for the “best zirconia crowns in Iraq”, ask where the crown is made and who matches the shade. Dr. Khalid Saeed holds Dubai Health Authority licence 06772519 and co-founded Creative Arts in Dubai; patients from every Iraqi governorate come to him for front and back crowns.
At Celebrity Smile Center in Duhok, the written plan sets out when zirconia suits best, for example on back teeth, on implants or over dark teeth, and when E.max veneers are better for front teeth. The tooth is X-rayed and any decay or nerve problem treated first. If you have old crowns with a black line, replacement is planned with the gums in mind.

How to choose the best dentist in Iraq for veneers and implants: verifiable criteria, a checklist, red flags and Dr. Khalid Saeed in Duhok as an example.
Read the articleZirconia is stronger and suits molars, implant crowns and people who grind. E.max is more translucent and lifelike, often preferred for visible front teeth and veneers. Many plans combine them: E.max at the front and zirconia at the back. Dr. Khalid Saeed chooses the material for each tooth by its position and the bite.
Older zirconia was more opaque, but newer types are more translucent and can be layered with porcelain to improve the look. Appearance also depends on shade and shape choice. For visible front teeth, E.max may suit better when looks are the priority.
A crown covers the tooth on all sides, so it needs more preparation than a veneer, and that cannot be reversed. Monolithic zirconia can sometimes allow a thinner crown than some other materials. That is why a crown is not chosen for a healthy tooth that a veneer or filling could treat.
The dark line is often caused by the metal base of an old crown, or by gum recession. Replacing it with metal-free zirconia solves the metal issue, but if the cause is recession or decay at the margin, that is treated too. An examination with X-rays identifies the cause.
Studies show good medium- to long-term results for zirconia crowns, and many last many years with care. No lifespan is guaranteed, though, and the tooth under the crown can decay at the margin if hygiene is neglected. Regular check-ups catch problems early.
Not always. Root treatment is needed only if the nerve is inflamed or dead, or decay is very deep. Many teeth are crowned with a healthy nerve. X-rays and examination decide this, and it is written in your plan.
A crown usually needs one visit for preparation and impressions and another for fitting, with a temporary crown in between. Root or gum treatment can add visits. The exact number is in your plan. Send photos and X-rays on WhatsApp first, and check the current route before travelling by road.
Look for a dentist who explains why you need a crown at all, compares zirconia and E.max for your specific tooth, treats gums and decay first, and gives you a written plan with the price. Dr. Khalid Saeed works this way at Celebrity Smile Center in Duhok.
If the front teeth are sound with enough enamel, veneers preserve more tooth because they cover only the front surface. If a tooth is badly broken, heavily filled or root-treated, a crown may suit better. On front teeth, crowns are usually E.max or high-translucency zirconia depending on the bite. Dr. Khalid Saeed explains the choice for each tooth in your written plan, and crowning healthy teeth just to change their colour is not recommended.
The material is the same, but the attachment differs: an implant crown is fixed to an abutment on the implant, either screwed or cemented, while a natural-tooth crown is cemented onto the prepared tooth. Zirconia is a common choice on implants because of its strength. Cleaning the gum around an implant crown is especially important to protect the bone around it.
Zirconia is one of the strongest crown materials and complete fractures are uncommon, but no material is unbreakable. Porcelain-layered zirconia can chip on its outer layer under heavy biting, and night-time grinding raises the risk. The bite is therefore assessed before design, and a night guard may be advised. Avoiding cracking bones or nut shells, or opening packaging with your teeth, protects any crown.
Well-polished zirconia is considered relatively kind to opposing teeth, whereas a rough or unpolished surface after adjustment can cause more wear. That is why the crown is polished after any bite adjustment in the clinic. If you grind your teeth, a night guard is advisable to protect both natural teeth and crowns. This is checked at regular reviews. Your dentist will explain how to protect both.
Monolithic (full) zirconia is made in one piece; it is strong and chip-resistant and often suits back teeth and people with a heavy bite. Layered zirconia has a zirconia core with an outer porcelain layer that gives more translucency and beauty on front teeth, but that outer layer is more prone to chipping. The type is chosen according to tooth position, bite and desired appearance, and stated in the plan.
