Can old veneers be removed with a laser without drilling?

Whitening, gums & laser
The short answer
In many cases, yes. The Waterlase laser passes through many glass-ceramic veneers such as E.max and weakens the bonding cement, so the veneer often comes off without being ground away, preserving more enamel. Zirconia and very thick or opaque veneers may still need conventional removal, and sometimes a veneer cracks during removal. Dr. Khalid Saeed decides this after examination at Celebrity Smile Center in Duhok, Kurdistan Region of Iraq.
The detailed answer
Many patients arrive with veneers placed years ago that they no longer like: flat opaque white, teeth too wide or long, a dark line at the gum, odour or inflammation, or a chipped shell. The traditional way to remove them is to grind them off with a drill, which can take away extra natural tooth underneath. So people ask whether a laser can remove them without drilling. The precise answer: usually without extra drilling, but enamel that was prepared in the past does not grow back.
Since around 2025, Dr. Khalid Saeed has used a Waterlase iPlus by Biolase in Duhok. Laser energy passes through thin ceramic and softens the cement, so in many cases the veneer lifts off whole or in a few pieces while the enamel underneath is preserved as much as possible. It does not work for every material: zirconia veneers, full crowns and very thick shells may not respond, and removal is then completed carefully with instruments. See our old veneer replacement with laser page.
After removal the tooth is examined: it may be healthy, or there may be decay under the old veneer or previous over-preparation that changes the plan, making a thicker veneer or a crown more suitable. The replacement is then designed like any new veneer: digital design on facial photos, a mock-up on the teeth and a written plan. New veneers are designed with Dr. Khalid, made at Creative Art Dental Lab in Dubai and fitted in Duhok.
If you have a problem with old veneers, take close-up front photos in daylight, note their type and age if you know them, and send them to Dr. Khalid. To recognise the signs of failing work, read our page on failed old veneers, and see veneer results at Creative Arts in Dubai.
